There can be no finer life than to be a ferryman down at St Mawes in Cornwall, moving people across the rivers of the frilly landscape. One lucky person will be paid to be the Place Ferry Skipper from April to October.
They are looking for an experienced boat-handler but will provide training and certification for a local qualification. All you have to do is steer a little boat safely from one side of paradise to the other, taking account of the tides, carrying the tourists and locals while the money-making season is on.
To get an idea of the job, this is one of the bigger ferries towards the Falmouth side, with a pod of dolphins playing around it.
If you can't pilot a boat, they sometimes need ticketing and distribution staff.

It sounds like an ideal job; given there's likely to be quite high unemployment in a mainly-rural and seasonal-trade area, it'll be interesting to see just how many applications they get...
Luckily for Falmouth - which is where the unemployment will be - the population is stable. Economically, it is more like Jersey. Servicing the rich and tourists provides entry-level work providing you don't mind turning your hand to cleaning, gardening, catering, healthcare and small building works.

I recall going there by train many years ago and checking into a small hotel, after dark, quite unaware of how broad the river is at that point.
Later, sitting in the bar, I nearly fell off my stool as the stern lights of a huge boat silently, eerily, floated past the window just feet away!

Actually I've known people who've piloted such ferries.
Very little pay. Nowhere nearby to live that's affordable.
Yes, 'fraid so; unless you already have a house there it is difficult to get in and the jobs tend to be second-income ones.
Except for building; there is good money to be made updating and maintaining properties for those prepared to put the hours in, if they already have the skills.
Best deal in Falmouth at the moment is a 2-bed bungalow with a massive garden ready for re-fitting and updating. £130k.
It's not a wreck so it's livable while the work is done.
However, it's a sealed-bid cash-only purchase.
