"Wo...Paul S you have totally missed the point. "Would you prefer EPCs or blackouts?" is a choice of the same order as "Would you prefer kittens or underpants?"

The underlying reality of the situation so deftly captured by Woman on a Raft here is that there is no greater squanderer of energy that governments making people do things that don't need to be done.

Incidentally, you are wrong on something else: I was very glad to see the back of lead in petrol. However, once again Big Government screwed it up by mandating three-way catalysts, at considerable environmental cost, for political reasons, rather than allowing lean-burn technology to go ahead.Submarinernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6068105406305319114.post-74025819361170892932010-06-24T14:38:54.486+01:002010-06-24T14:38:54.486+01:00Other than an ability to read legal documents, you...Other than an ability to read legal documents, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about!
Energy generation is not just a European problem, it is not just a problem about Global Warming, it is not even simply a problem about wealth. The simple fact is, and it is a FACT, is that we are using too much energy.
Uber-wealthy Gulf states are now legislating to ensure that property (commercial and domestic) reach a certain standard, for the simple reason that they simply cannot generate enough energy compared to what is being used! Asia is doing the same, and so is China (slowly).
Would you prefer EPCs or blackouts? Because that is what will happen in 5 years time, without action.
The same is in the pipeline regarding water – and again, this is a global issue.
You may not like it – but the times of sticking your heads in the sand and ignoring energy and water – ARE OVER.
Oh, and by the way EPC assessor's may not know very much, but they know enough to get the job done – and they certainly know enough to realise the difference between low voltage and low energy. You lot just check your lovely halogen spot lights that I'm sure all have dotted around your homes and then add up all that wattage!
So you guys carry on with your diatribe, I'm sure years ago you would have been the same people complaining about legislating against smog and lead in petrol.paul snoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6068105406305319114.post-81212448516527257962010-06-22T09:20:50.670+01:002010-06-22T09:20:50.670+01:00Good idea. It wasn't posted at 5 o'clock in the morning, either. I'm reluctant to fiddle with it in case I get sucked in to a time vortex. If the Raft says it is 5am, then who am I to argue with her? You don't find Dr Who contradicting the Tardis either.

Indeed, the whole EPC edifice is a tick-box scam, a waste of paper and, paradoxically, a waste of energy.

What is even more depressing than self-employed pretend assessors, is that local authorities are obliged to have salaried and pensioned pretend assessors putting out customized pointless guff in every area.

If you have ever spoken to one of these people - and it is very often a pleasant young lady - you will find a person convinced they are saving the world by going "have you got a new boiler?" and prone to bursting in to tears if you say you don't think their job is worth doing and shouldn't be coming out of public money at all.

They honestly believe they are doing a skilled job for which they have been trained and that the average householder couldn't possibly work out which box to tick.Woman on a Rafthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08897415591130901416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6068105406305319114.post-10529172714233080582010-06-20T22:27:40.384+01:002010-06-20T22:27:40.384+01:00Off-topic - but that above was posted at 10:23 pm ...Off-topic - but that above was posted at 10:23 pm or 22:23 BST, not "2:23:00 PM"Joe Publichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07829909061904690380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6068105406305319114.post-87869964480908545992010-06-20T22:23:37.971+01:002010-06-20T22:23:37.971+01:00".... only a qualified surveyor would be able...".... only a qualified surveyor would be able to undertake a meaningful assessment."

People from any walk of life who've paid to go on a few-days course with the promise of untold riches from a captive audience.

But the vast majority of those 'surveyors' know little about heating & energy use/efficiency.

If they can see insulation in the loft, two panes of glass in the window, thermostatic rad valves, and, a bit of plastic tubing draining off the boiler, the house gets all its tick-boxes filled.Joe Publichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07829909061904690380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6068105406305319114.post-18153946097003962962010-06-20T16:53:09.845+01:002010-06-20T16:53:09.845+01:00You win a prize for staying awake long enough to g...You win a prize for staying awake long enough to get there.
